KnoWhat2Do. Teaching Children About Dialing 9-1-1

Animated Phone

The news is full of warm and fuzzy tales about toddlers saving their parents’ lives by dialing 9-1-1.  Not reported are all the times children dial the number in play or by lack of understanding of its uses.  Using the service responsibly benefits all North Central Texans.  Children can dial, and get help, if they KnoWhat2Do.

The KnoWhat2Do disaster preparedness program encourages parents to teach 9-1-1 usage to their children.  Many times, children can dial the number but can’t answer simple questions that will help the dispatcher gather critical information.  Some children can’t even dial the number because they haven’t been shown how.

Through North Central Texas’ KnoWhat2Do program, and associated Web site  www.KnoWhat2Do.com, parents will find the steps to teach their children proper 9-1-1 usage.  They will also find reminders about improper use and its consequences. The Web site outlines talking points to help children address their fears and know the facts.  It also has a clear list of information parents should help their children memorize.

We encourage Richardson citizens to protect themselves and their families by educating their families. Their safety and survival depend on whether they KnoWhat2Do. Learn more at www.KnoWhat2Do.com and www.cor.net/ep. Think. Prepare. Act.
