In-Duct Smoke Detector Testing Requirements

The Richardson Fire Department requires in-duct smoke detectors that are supervised by a fire alarm system to be tested in accordance with the National Fire Alarm Code [see below] and the manufacturer's instructions.

(6) Duct type  

 In addition to the testing required in Table 14.4.2.2(g)(1), duct smoke detectors utilizing sampling tubes shall be tested by verifying the correct pressure differential (within the manufacturer’s published ranges) between the inlet and exhaust tubes using a method acceptable to the manufacturer to ensure that the device will properly sample the airstream. These tests shall be made in accordance with the manufacturer’s published instructions for the device installed.

 

         

The following must be submitted to the Fire Department, with the Fire Protection System Permit number indicated, as part of the final acceptance of the system:

  1. A copy of the manufacturer’s instructions, describing the test methods and the acceptable range;
  2. The individual measurements and differential calculations for each unit.  The measurements and results must be on letterhead, signed by a representative of the fire alarm or HVAC contractor.
