The City of Richardson has won many awards for its efforts to protect and enrich the environment.
- In 2010, Richardson's Fire Station #2 received LEED Silver Certification for enhanced construction sustainability, water and energy efficiency, enhanced air quality, indoor chemical pollution control, and innovative environmental design.
- Huffhines Recreation Center is currently in the LEED certification process.
- Richardson was the first North Texas city recognized as a Best Workplace for Commuters by the EPA and the Department of Transportation in 2004 and has continued to be recognized every year since.
- Richardson was named the Employer of the Year by the North Texas Clean Air Coalition in 2004-2007 and Clean Air Champion in 2008.

The Center for Development Excellence was created in 2001 to promote quality development in the region. Most recently, Richardson won the 2009 CLIDE award in the "Public Policy and Planning" category for the current Comprehensive Plan. Richardson also won two CLIDE awards in 2007. The award-winning entries were the Spring Valley Station District/Centennial Park Project in the Public Policy and Planning category and the Texas Instruments Richardson Fabrication Facility in the Special Development category. The awards jury cited the City's vision for a transit-oriented development that will create a pedestrian friendly neighborhood and provide a Live, Work, Play environment that will be a source of pride for the entire community.
- The Texas Municipal League presented its 2004 “Excellence Award—City Spirit Category” to the City of Richardson Parks and Recreation Department for its “Richardson Urban Naturalist (RUN) Program, leading to the Duck Creek Park Habitat Improvement Project.” Citizens and city employees enthusiastically gathered together in April 2004 to plant native grasses and plants along the banks of Duck Creek in East Richardson to give the ducks a place to call home.
- The Greater Dallas Planning Council presented the 2002 Urban Design Award - Dream/Vision Award to the City of Richardson Parks and Recreation Department for its involvement in the Six Cities Trail Plan along with the cities of Allen, Frisco, Garland, McKinney and Plano.
- The City of Richardson was accepted as a Blue Skyway Collaborative Community in recognition of the many positive voluntary efforts undertaken to improve air quality.
- The City of Richardson and Mesa Design Group of Dallas were awarded Honorable Mention in 2003 from the Texas Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects for the Light Rail Pedestrian Enhancement Plan, which focused on increasing safety, usability, and visual appeal for pedestrians at DART stations in Richardson.
