Photo Red Light Enforcement

Image of Red Light Photo EnforcementAccording to the Federal Highway Administration more than 2.7 million intersection crashes occur across the country annually, resulting in over 9,000 fatalities each year.  Each year more than 50% of all reported crashes and 22% of all injury crashes occur in an intersection.

During 2005 approximately 9.2% of all reported vehicle collisions in the City of Richardson were related to red light violations. These types of crashes are usually side impacts and are much more likely to result in heavier damage, serious injury, and even death. Effective traffic management remains a high priority for our citizens, the business community and city officials.

The Richardson Police Department has always made red light enforcement a major priority in traffic enforcement. Richardson police officers have written almost 14,000 citations for running red lights over the past five years.  Significant resources have been dedicated towards this problem, yet we still see senseless collisions and injuries being caused by red light runners.

As a part of Richardson’s continuing traffic safety enforcement efforts, the City began to use Photo Red Light Enforcement on January 30, 2006. The use of cameras to capture red light violations comes as part of the City’s increasing efforts to make the streets safer for everyone.

The City of Richardson has nine cameras at six intersections. Those locations are: Southbound Plano Road and Arapaho Road; Eastbound Centennial Boulevard at Greenville Ave, Westbound and Northbound approaches at the Campbell Road and Coit Road intersection, Eastbound and Westbound approaches of Beltline Road at US75, Northbound and Southbound approaches of Campbell Road at US75 and Northbound Jupiter Road at PGBT.

All the locations have been selected based on the following criteria; crashes, current and future construction plans, and the extent of red light running.

The violation carries a $75 civil penalty and will not appear on a person’s driving record.
