CARPORT REQUIREMENTS

Are you trying to protect your automobile or other items from the harsh conditions by adding a carport?  Before you get started remember to get a permit from the City of Richardson Building Inspection Department.

Two copies of the following plans are required for this permit.

  1. Plot plan of the property drawn to scale.
  2. Drawing of side elevation.
  3. Drawing of roof details.
  4. For pre-fabricated metal structures, the manufacturer’s engineered specifications are required.

Here are some guidelines on placement of detached and attached carports.

Detached Carports:

  1. Shall be a minimum of 3’ from the rear property line or 18" from the rear property line, if there is an alley, to any part of the carport.
  2. Shall be a minimum of 3’ from the side property line to any part of the carport if located entirely within rear 25’ of yard. Carports on the street side of corner lots shall meet the minimum building setbacks for that lot.
  3. Must meet the minimum driveway widths and lengths to conform to the off street parking and maneuvering requirements shown in the drawing.

Carports Attached to Main Structure or Directly Against:

  1. Shall be a minimum of 3’ from the rear property line or 18" from the rear property line, if there is an alley, to any part of the carport.
  2. Shall be a minimum of 7’ from the side property line to supporting member with a maximum 2’ roof overhang. Carports on the street side of corner lots shall meet the minimum building setbacks for that lot.
  3. Must meet the minimum driveway widths and lengths to conform to the off street parking and maneuvering requirements shown in the drawing.
