Art Gets Hip

New UTD class and exhibition inspired by iPhone app Hipstamatic

Richardson, TX (July 8, 2010) – It’s a case of art imitating…technology. University of Texas at Dallas alumnus Donna Harris presents a photography class and art show, “The Hip Shootout®,” inspired by the photography iPhone application Hipstamatic, which is known for its retro-style analog pictures, July 17 and 31, respectively. Harris is the creator of Intownmix.com, a Dallas-based B2B web magazine established in 2006. After playing around with the Hipstamatic app, she loved the results and began researching the history of the original Hipstamatic 100 camera, created in 1982.

The two-day event will begin on Saturday, July 17 with “Hipsta Class,” a creative learning project and class in the Visual Arts Building on the UT Dallas campus from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., and again from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Photographer and artist Ange Fitzgerald will hold an informal instruction group to demonstrate how to download and use the Hipstamatic application and create the old-school analog photos. Students will learn about the different features it has in regards to film, lenses and flash, as well as a unique philosophy to picture taking. Following the short intro, Fitzgerald and Harris will take students on a photo field trip on campus, where students will shoot with Fitzgerald and learn ideas for editing and printing the images taken with the app. The cost of the class is $25.

On Saturday, July 31, “The Hip Shootout” exhibition will be on display in the Visual Arts Gallery from 6:30 – 9 p.m. It will include a printed piece by each of the students who attended the Hipsta Class, printed selections taken with the Hipstamatic app by professional artists and entrepreneurs in the creative industry, and entries from anyone who wishes to submit photos taken with their iPhone Hipstamatic. Submission deadline is July 26. For a complete list of guidelines, visit http://www.intownmix.com/index.php/1865_call_to_hipsta.
