Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows you to borrow materials that are not owned by Richardson Public Library. Persons requesting InterLibrary Loans must be property owners or residents of Richardson and have a valid Richardson Public Library card with no fines or overdue materials.
How does Interlibrary Loan work?
When Richardson Public Library receives an Interlibrary Loan request, a query is sent to a list of owning libraries requesting the loan. Once the requested material is received, you will be notified that you can check out the requested item or, rarely, use the material in the Reference Area.
How do I make a request?
Before requesting an Interlibrary Loan, please check the Library Catalog to verify that Richardson Public Library does not own the item.
There are several ways to request an InterLibrary Loan:
- Pick up a request form at any Library Information Desk
- Phone in your request at 972-744-4355
- Submit your request using the ILL Request Form
We will not accept requests for reference books or materials published or released within the last six months. High demand or popular materials probably will be unavailable.
How long will it take to receive my request?
InterLibrary Loans usually arrive within 10 days to 2 weeks; difficult-to-obtain items may take longer to arrive. You may check on the status of your request by emailing us firstname.lastname@example.org.
How long can I check out the material?
The library that lends Richardson Public Library the requested item determines the checkout period. Typical checkout periods are two to three weeks. Renewals are not possible. Some items may be held for you at the Reference Desk, and your library card will be required to access the material.
How much does ILL cost?
Richardson Public Library does not charge for ILL service. Rarely the lending library will charge for copies or for lending. If this is the case, fees charged for a loan are usually $15-$25. Copy fees average $.25/page. Fees for overdue materials are $1.00 per day per item. Fees for lost or damaged materials are set by the lending library.
