The Professional Standards Section serves many functions for the Department. The Unit’s responsibilities include Internal Affairs, Backgrounds, and Inspections.

The Richardson Police Department views internal discipline as the principle means of earning community support and promotes an expectation of accountability, thereby establishing mutual public trust. Internal Affairs is established to provide this important process for the Chief of Police. Understanding that public sentiment is often cultivated on a one-to-one basis, it is the Department’s continued goal to assure that our established internal processes will provide the City of Richardson with a Police Department that will be responsive to those social values that recognize and establish individual officers as professionals.

The Backgrounds process ensures that potential employees meet departmental qualifications and position standards prior to employment. Background investigations are conducted for all entry-level positions for both sworn and civilian personnel. The process includes a post-test examination of all applicants’ personal and professional history to ensure employees hired meet the highest standards. Backgrounds’ obligation to the applicant is to process their application in a fair and equitable manner. The obligation to the citizens of Richardson is a Police Department comprised of employees of the highest integrity and professionalism.

The inspections process ensures that all vehicular pursuits, use of force, and on the job injuries are reviewed for compliance with all Departmental policies and procedures. The inspections are made to provide opportunities to improve training and review policy in regard to those three areas.
