Residential Roofing Requirements
The City of Richardson requires that a building permit be obtained for any roof replacement/recovering or repair which exceeds 25% of the total roof area. The purpose of the permit is to ensure that the proper codes are being followed in regards to the reroofing of your house. The following code requirements are items that must be inspected or verified:
- The maximum number of layers of roofing material allowed is two.
- If the roof is being redecked, the decking must be inspected prior to being covered.
- If your existing shingles are wood, they must be removed before being replaced or overlaid with composition. Proper ventilation of the attic area must be provided.
- All new and roof coverings for single family dwellings must have a minimum class "C" fire resistant classification.
A building permit must be obtained prior to any work taking place. As with any other contractor in the city, roofing contractors must be registered in the City of Richardson. If you have any questions regarding these requirements, contact the Building Inspection Department at (972) 744-4180.
