Thousands of North Texas Employees Set for 16th Annual Richardson Corporate Challenge
Posted Date: 8/15/2013 12:00 PM

Organizers of the 16th annual Richardson Corporate Challenge, sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, today announced that more than 50 DFW-area companies have committed to participate in the City’s 10-week, Olympic-style corporate competition, which runs from mid-August to mid-October.

More than 10,000 employees from companies such as Baylor Health Care System, Cisco, PepsiCo and Samsung will take part in 24 athletic and non-athletic events to raise funds in support of Special Olympics Texas and its local affiliate, the Richardson Roadrunners – the event’s beneficiary since its inception.

The City of Richardson and participating companies have raised more than $1.2 million for Special Olympics Texas and the organization’s local affiliate in the last 15 years, including an impressive $172,000 during last year’s games.

The Richardson Corporate Challenge, the only corporate competition of its kind in Texas, will kick off on the evening of Friday, Aug. 16, with an opening ceremony at Richardson’s Galatyn Plaza attended by thousands of North Texas employees. In addition to tailgate parties organized by the corporate teams, the event will feature a ceremonial torch-lighting, a parade of athletes from Special Olympics Texas, the Richardson Firefighter and Police Department Honor Guards, great music and a one-mile “Great Walk” challenge.

“We are excited to kick off our 16th annual Olympic-style event with our friends at Special Olympics Texas and more than 50 leading companies in North Texas,” said Richardson Mayor Laura Maczka. “The incredible interest in this competition helps emphasize that Richardson is a great place to work and play. It’s also a great way for companies to promote corporate wellness and positive corporate citizenship through fundraising efforts for Special Olympics Texas and the Richardson Roadrunners.”

The Corporate Challenge includes competitions in events ranging from athletic sports such as softball, basketball and flag football, to darts, billiards and miniature golf. The Challenge ends with a closing ceremony and an announcement of winners on Friday, Oct. 18. A full schedule of events can be found online at

Companies interested in tracking this year’s results, signing up for the 2014 Richardson Corporate Challenge, or being a sponsor for this year’s games should visit the competition’s website,, or contact Robbie Hazelbaker,, for more information. The cost for participation ranges from $2,000 for companies with fewer than 349 employees, to $2,500 for companies with 350 or more employees.

The Richardson Corporate Challenge is a professionally run, volunteer-driven, Olympic-style competition produced by the Richardson Parks & Recreation Department. A managing board, made up of a select group of company representatives and City employees, developed the policies and procedures that rule and govern the events.
