This past week, Richardson's newest economic development partner, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, officially placed its name on its new space it will be moving into later this year at the Heights Shopping Center. The new sign is not as impressive as what will eventually go up, but it is a welcome sign to the thousands, if not tens-of-thousands or more, fans waiting for the new cinema to open.
Richardson will be the home to the first Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in the Metroplex as the Austin favorite expands into the region. The theater has developed a loyal following over the years and offers a unique movie-going experience. The 35,350 square-foot Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will be a state-of-the-art theater with 100 percent digital projection.
Richardson used an economic incentive package to lure the development so it could serve as a catalyst for the shopping center, attracting other enviable retail to Richardson. The Heights Shopping Center was built in the late 1950s and early 1960s and has been a focus of revitalization efforts by the City and property owners.
