The City Council on Monday approved a contract to purchase and implement a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system at the Richardson Public Library. The new system is one of the projects approved in the 2010 Bond Program.
RFID uses tags to track and sort items as they are checked out and returned.
Retagging of all Library materials is expected to take approximately four to six weeks. Self-service check-out kiosks and updated staffed check-out stations are expected to be in place in January, with an automated materials handling system in place by April or May.
