Richardson Animal Shelter Earns Fourth Recognition as Humane Educator of the Year From State Organization
Posted Date: 11/16/2012 10:30 AM

The City of Richardson’s Animal Shelter received the prestigious recognition of Humane Educator of the Year at the Texas Animal Control Association’s (TACA) 38th Annual Conference this past week in Houston, Texas. Richardson has earned this recognition three times in the past for its shelter’s outstanding community involvement and education activities.

“Richardson’s Animal Shelter is very deserving of this recognition as Humane Educator of the Year,” said Richardson Mayor Bob Townsend. “We are proud of the work the shelter has done to educate our residents and offer such great services not only to residents, but also to provide exceptional care to animals in need.”

The Humane Educator Award is given every year by TACA, a statewide association committed to the advancement of all animal control and animal welfare professionals through education, leadership, and advocacy. The award recognizes outstanding agencies and people in the animal care and control profession who promote humane education to the children and adults in their own community or in the state.

Earlier this year, the shelter made a proactive goal to increase its digital outreach by launching a Facebook page, which has more than 800 likes and has helped connect animals in need with other rescue groups and foster homes across Texas. The shelter hosts an extensive number of events each year, and with the implementation and growth of the Facebook page, the events have received more attention and increased attendance.

Some of the outreach programs provided by the City include the highly successful AnimalLuv events, participation with various homeowners’ associations, events with children in the public schools, public petting zoos, the Citywide Pet Day and a presence at Richardson’s Wildflower! Festival.

The City of Richardson Animal Services Department, which maintains the animal shelter, is focused on responsive, effective and courteous animal care and control assistance to residents, and it accomplishes these goals by helping protect people and their property along with acting as a humane organization that protects animals.

The Richardson Animal Shelter is an open adoption facility and is passionate about rescuing, protecting, and relocating pets to new homes. For more information, visit the City’s Animal Service Department.
