New Director to Lead City Transportation Efforts

Richardson City Manager Dan Johnson has appointed Mark Nelson to serve as director of the City’s newly organized Transportation and Mobility Department. The Department includes the City’s traffic division which is responsible for a variety of transportation projects and studies.

When he assumes his role in Richardson Nov. 1, 2018, Nelson will be responsible for the creation, oversight and implementation of long- and short-range planning for transportation facilities and programs. Duties of the position also include providing professional counsel and technical advice to the City Management, City Council, City Plan Commission and Department staff on matters relating to the operation, management, and policy and program development of the Transportation and Mobility Department. Nelson will also be responsible for administering and managing intergovernmental relations on transportation issues and serving as the liaison to related transportation agencies.

Nelson currently serves as Transportation Director for the City of Denton, where he has progressed as a transportation professional over the past 22 years. He has been in his current role since 2005, where his responsibilities include oversight of the Fleet Services Division and Denton Enterprise Airport, and coordination of regional transportation initiatives including serving as staff liaison to the City Council Mobility Committee and Council Airport Committee. Nelson also serves as Denton’s staff liaison with the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) and represents Denton on the North Central Texas Council of Governments’ Surface Transportation Technical Committee.

Nelson has a B.S. in Political Science from Texas A&M University and holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Texas. He is also a member of the Texas City Managers Association and active member of Rotary, having served on the board of the Denton Morning Rotary Club from 1998-2002 and president from 2001-2002. His community service also includes serving as the co-chair of the Denton United-Way from 2001-2002 and he is a 2004 Class graduate of the Leadership Denton program. He also served as Program Chair for Leadership Denton from 2010-2011.

Adding to his transportation background, Nelson is also a licensed private pilot and certified member of the American Association of Airport Executives. From 2001-2002 he served as the President of the Texas Airport Council (TAC-formerly Texas Airport Management Association) and was the Secretary/Treasurer of TAC in 2000-2001.
