City of Richardson Trash, Recycling and Facility Schedule for MLK Holiday
There will be NO trash, recycling or Brush and Bulky Item Collection (BABIC) service provided Monday, Jan. 20. There will be NO makeup days for trash collection or BABIC. The table below shows the makeup days for recycling service.

No City Council Meeting Monday
Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, there will be no City Council work session or meeting Monday, Jan. 20. The Council will next meet Monday, Jan. 27 for a work session and meeting beginning at 6 p.m. For future agendas and meeting dates, go to www.cor.net/CityCouncil.
Changes to Mobile Food Vendor Ordinance Considered
Health Department staff presented proposed updates to the City’s mobile food vendor ordinance at Monday’s City Council work session. The changes to the ordinance would affect short-term mobile vendors, such as food trucks that visit private/commercial property to serve patrons/employees. Other classes of mobile food vendors (Temporary Events, Open Air/Farmer’s Markets and Food Truck Parks) would not be affected.
The proposed changes address vehicle location while on the property, hours of operation and signage. After providing feedback at Monday’s presentation, the City Council will consider adopting the revised ordinance at the Jan. 27 City Council meeting.
City to Enhance Safety, Accessibility at Richardson Woman’s Club
The Richardson Woman’s Club is getting an accessibility makeover thanks to a new ramp/walkway to be constructed on the property. A construction bid for the project was approved by the City Council Monday night.
The ramp redevelopment project addresses safety concerns and ADA access requirements and features a new paved ramp/walkway leading from the front of the property to both the Clubhouse and the entrance to Founder’s Hall. The project also includes new landscaping and lighting.
The City-owned facility, located at 2005 N. Cliffe Dr., is named for the longstanding local philanthropic organization that has been managing it since 1969. It includes a historic home (aka “the Clubhouse”), a gazebo and the 200-seat Hall, all which are available for event rental. Proceeds benefit the Club’s numerous local philanthropies and scholarships.
How Will 2020 Census Data Be Used?
The 2020 Census will be conducted between January and July and will help residents and communities, like Richardson.
Communities will be able to use the information collected to plan bus routes, draw school district boundaries and offer community services. Businesses will be able to use the information collected to decide where to invest in the community. These new locations create jobs and support Richardson’s economy. Businesses also use the information to determine what to sell in their stores so communities get what they need. The information also helps communities receive funding from the federal government.
Parks and Recreation Birthday Celebration Continues
Parks and Recreation staff addressed the City Council Monday with information about the Department’s history and 60th birthday festivities, which are taking place this month. Activities have included a “selfie scavenger hunt,” online trivia contests and a traveling ball hopper game, with a variety of prizes. Still to come is an “old school style” scavenger hunt (Jan. 20-31) and customer appreciation parties.
The Richardson Parks and Recreation Department officially began Dec. 29, 1959 with an ordinance creating the “Department of Public Parks.” City-sponsored recreational activities had already been taking place at that point, with the purchase of the City’s first park lands (Terrace and Heights) in 1956 and the construction of a community center in 1957 on Lockwood Drive, now home to the Richardson Masonic Lodge. Today the Department oversees 1,841 acres of parks and green space, including 17 public facilities, 32 playgrounds and 230 acres of athletic fields.
Daytime Delays Possible on Plano Road South of CityLine
The left and center lanes of southbound Plano Road between Broadmoor Drive and Braeburn Drive may be closed to traffic from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. through late January due to concrete replacement/street rehabilitation. The work is part of the annual street repair project.
Applications Open for 2020 Mayor’s Summer Internship Program
The Mayor’s Summer Internship Program has opened the application process for the 2020 session. Now in its third year, the Program is a collaboration between the City, RISD and the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and enables incoming high school seniors to receive eight weeks of paid summer employment at a local business, nonprofit or government agency. Students gain invaluable real-world experience and exposure to careers in which they’ve expressed an interest, work 20-40 hours per week and earn a minimum of $10 per hour.
Student applications will be accepted through Feb. 29. To qualify, students also must complete online workforce readiness courses and participate in a training session and job fair. Those chosen for internships after job fair interviews must be available for leadership training May 30-31 and be able to work June 1-Aug. 7.

Save the Date: Annual “Newcomer’s Guide to Gardening” Event is Jan. 25
The fourth annual “Newcomers Guide to Gardening in North Texas” event will be held Saturday, Jan. 25 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the McKinney ISD Community Event Center, 4201 Hardin Blvd. in McKinney (south end of the MISD stadium). Focused on those new to gardening and/or new to North Texas, it features presentations and Q&As with local experts along with numerous vendors/information tables.
Admission is free—register online to reserve a seat.
Sensory Saturday Jan. 18
Children ages 5-9 and their families are invited to visit interactive centers and explore a host of sensory activities and books Saturday, Jan. 18 from 11:30 a.m.-noon in the First Floor Program Room. This new activity will be held once each month through April.
Admission is free and no registration is required.
For Teens: DNA Fingerprinting with the Perot Museum Jan. 18
Learn how scientists compare DNA samples using DNA fingerprinting Saturday, Jan. 18 from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Basement Program Room. Perot Museum staff will be on hand to help teens use models to review the structure and function of DNA, gain experience using micropipettes and other lab equipment and perform the separation techniques of paper chromatography and gel electrophoresis. Come early at 2 p.m. for the Teen Advisory Board meeting.
For ages 13-18. Admission is free but registration is required.
UT Dallas to Honor the Life of Martin Luther King Jr. with Breakfast, Service Project
UT Dallas will host several events next week in conjunction with the national Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The university’s Multicultural Center will host an inaugural Unity Walk across campus Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 11 a.m.-noon. The Walk is open to the public but registration is requested.
Other events include a sold-out celebration breakfast for students, staff and faculty featuring former State Rep. Helen Giddings and a Day of Service for student organizations.

The acclaimed actor/singer/storyteller returns to the Eisemann Center in “Diaries,” a powerful evening of song with Adam Ben-David on piano. Patinkin performs many of his favorite Broadway and classic American tunes along with selections from his newest recordings, including compositions from Randy Newman, Stephen Sondheim, Harry Chapin and Rufus Wainwright.

The flying feet of tap artists from Broadway, film, TV and the concert stage will share the legacy of tap dancing while showcasing what the future of tap is all about. Featured artists include Ted Louis Levy, Christopher Broughton, Elizabeth Burke, Derick Grant, Dianne Walker, Acia Gray and Brenda Bufalino.

An American composer, guitarist and recording artist with immersive studies in traditional jazz, classical North India and classical composition, Todd Mosby masterfully embodies the musical philosophies and traditions found in each of these disciplines.

“Diversity Dialogues” is an interactive, engaging, facilitated dinner and discussion activity that welcomes the community to the table along with UTD students, staff and faculty. “WRTC Retro Radio” at Richardson Theatre Centre this Weekend
Enjoy a trip to the days of old-time radio with “WRTC Retro Radio Presents Radio Play 2020...The Great (Re)Broadcast of (1949) 2020” at Richardson Theatre Centre Jan. 17-19. The show features music, songs and comedy from broadcasts of radio days gone by including “Fibber McGee and Molly,” “Sam Spade, Private Eye,” and “Lights Out” along with many other classic shows.
The one-weekend-only production kicks off the Theatre’s 2020 “Floor to Ceiling” fundraising campaign and includes food, door prizes and raffle tickets beginning at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday with a 1 p.m. matinee Sunday. Show tickets are $25. Richardson Theatre Centre is located at 518 W. Arapaho Rd.
DART Student Art Contest Opens
DART has opened applications for the 2020 DART Student Art Contest. The theme for this year’s contest is “Paint the Town _______. Ride DART.” Young artists in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to “fill in the blank” and visually illustrate the theme with artwork in color or black and white.
Winners in each grade level category (K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th and 9th-12th) receive prizes and/or cash; an overall Best of Show winner receives a $1,000 cash prize. All winners will have their artwork displayed at the Dallas Museum of Art, Love Field Airport, on DART’s website and at select “DARTable” locations; several winners will have their artwork featured on DART vehicles and at DART stations.
The deadline for submission is Feb. 28.
Annual Wildlife Habits Cause Increase in Coyote, Bobcat Activity
It’s now mating season for both coyotes and bobcats, so area residents may see an increase in sightings of the animals over the next few months, as they are part of the natural habitat of North Texas. Bobcats and coyotes rarely pose a threat to people, but domesticated pets such as small dogs and cats could be at risk if left alone or taken off their leash near natural areas. If pets must be kept outdoors, keep them in a securely fenced area—keep in mind that bobcats can climb trees and fences and can also jump up to 12 feet, and coyotes can jump over a five-foot fence. In addition, wildlife are attracted to the rodents that come to eat dropped/spilled food and garbage, so feed pets indoors, keep bird feeders above an animal’s reach (and prevent the buildup of feeder food underneath) and secure garbage containers.

NCTCOG/Air North Texas Offers New Year’s Resolutions
The North Central Texas Council of Government’s (NCTCOG) Air North Texas division has some suggestions for environmentally friendly New Year’s resolutions that can help improve air quality. Here are a few that were posted to their blog recently:
- Keep reusable and foldable grocery bags in your vehicle, bicycle, backpack or purse. Plastic bags are the second most prevalent form of litter found in landfills, and generating plastic is harmful to our atmosphere since it is made up of chemicals such as benzene and vinyl hydrochloride.
- Try to cook more at home and order less takeout to reduce the amount of fuel emissions typically used to deliver food. Reducing takeout also reduces the amount of plastic and Styrofoam containers used in packaging prepared foods.
- Walk, bike or take public transportation. Earn points, discounts and prizes for doing so through NCTCOG’s free “Try Parking It” program (and earn points at the same time for your city/school district in the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge).
Holiday Tree Cycling Continues
Still have a Christmas tree shedding unwanted pine needles on your floors or lying in the backyard? The City is encouraging residents to “tree cycle” natural Christmas trees by turning them into mulch and compost through the City’s Tree Cycling program. Trees may be dropped off through Feb. 1 at the Municipal Service Center, 1260 Columbia Dr., or set out at the curb and picked up as part of the City’s Brush and Bulky Item Collection (BABIC).
The Service Center site will be open 24 hours, seven days a week; for BABIC pick-up, call 972-744-4111 and be sure to request that the tree be collected for composting.
Tree cycling guidelines:
- Trees must be natural (not artificial) and unflocked.
- All ornaments, tinsel, tree stands, nails, lights, etc., must be removed.
- Calls for BABIC must be received before the designated collection day (your BABIC day is the same as your recycling day).
Combination Inspector ($4,161-$5,904 monthly)
Building Inspection is seeking an individual interested in inspecting buildings, construction sites and construction components for compliance with building, plumbing and mechanical codes and laws. Certifications as an ICC Commercial Building and Energy Inspector are required. Texas driver’s license, Class C required.
Custodian ($2,052-$3,019 monthly)
Custodial Services is seeking an individual with experience in cleaning facilities, performing event setups and breakdowns and performing minor maintenance tasks in buildings. Completion of eleventh grade is required; high school diploma or G.E.D. preferred. Texas driver’s, Class C required. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; pull, push and/or drag up to 150 pounds. Work Hours: 5 p.m.-1 a.m. Work days vary.
Part-Time Lifeguard-seasonal ($9.50-$12.72 hourly)
The Parks Department is hiring for summer 2020. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age with a current certification in Lifeguard Training (YMCA or American Red Cross, CPRPR and first aid).
Animal Shelter Pet of the Week
Meet Mona! Senior dogs are the best! They are past that hyper puppy stage and they’ve settled into their own established personalities. That’s why everyone loves Mona. She wants to spend her time hanging out with her people and she’s truly hoping much of that time will be spent on the couch, napping and cuddling. She is about 11 years young, spayed, fully vaccinated, house trained and ready for a new beginning.
