On Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 1:20 p.m. the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and of Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA).
The purpose of the test is to ensure the systems continue to be an effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level.
The WEA portion of the test will appear on cell phones with a message that reads
“THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions.
Oct. 11 is the back-up testing date in the event of severe weather or other significant events.
