Submissions Now Open for Third Annual Traffic Signal Box Art Contest

Post Date:03/01/2024 10:00 AM

Submissions opened March 1 for the City’s annual Traffic Signal Box Art Contest. Technology and Education is the theme for the third annual event, sponsored by City of Richardson and the Richardson Rotary Club.

“The Traffic Signal Box Art contest is a great way to showcase local artists and beautify our city at the same time,” said Richardson Mayor Bob Dubey. “Technology and education is the perfect theme for this year’s contest. Technology and Richardson go hand in hand, as we have long been home to companies on the leading edge of technological innovation, and the University of Texas at Dallas makes us one of the few cities in DFW where you can go from Pre-K to a PhD without ever leaving home.”

The contest is open to individual artists of all ages. A selection committee will review submissions and select contest finalists. The five winners will be determined according to three main criteria – creativity, adherence to the Technology and Education theme and artistic merit.

In addition to their artwork being showcased in the community, artists with winning entries will also receive $200, a certificate and have their work published in the Richardson Today and other municipal communication channels.

Winning designs chosen for the traffic signal boxes will also be showcased at the following intersections:

  • Alma Road and North Collins Boulevard
  • Brand Road and East Renner Road
  • Melrose Drive and Mimosa Drive
  • Rutford Avenue and Synergy Park Boulevard
  • East Spring Valley Road and South St. Johns Drive

Participating artists may submit one original digital design aligned to the Technology and Education theme that can be easily converted to a digitally printed wrap that covers the entire traffic signal box. All designs must be:

  • Original artwork and cannot include copyrighted or trademarked images, commercial logos or advertisements;
  • Designs should be free from any representation that includes traffic lights, signs or signal images of any kind;
  • Artists may sign their designs but should limit any other wording; and
  • All submissions should feature a design appropriate for viewing by all ages.

All completed applications and artwork submissions are due by 5 p.m. Thursday, April 25. Information about the contest is available at www.cor.net/boxart. Any questions about entry requirements may be directed to Kimberly Kort by phone at 972-744-4213 or by e-mail to kimberly.kort@cor.gov.

About the Contest
