At 6:22 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, an external party temporarily gained access to the City’s servers and attempted to encrypt data files within the network. Automated security systems immediately responded, containing the impact to a small number of files. As a precautionary measure, internal access to City servers has been shut down, currently limiting access to some file systems. The specific type of data compromised is still under assessment, and there is no early indication sensitive data was accessed.
“The threat of these incidents is a reality that all cities face, and it is something we have been diligently preparing for,” said City Manager Don Magner. “At this point, our security protocols seem to have successfully minimized the impact, and we hope this continues. We are doing everything in our power to restore our systems as quickly as possible and will identify resources necessary to assist affected individuals, if necessary.”
While access to internal information is limited, essential services such as emergency response, online payments, solid waste service requests, and other customer portals remain available.
The City is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is investigating the incident, and efforts are underway to restore internal systems by replacing equipment and recovering information from backups. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also been notified of the incident and is alerting other agencies to increase awareness for any sign of other incidents.
Additional updates will be provided when further information is available.
