The Arbor Day Foundation has named Richardson a 2024 Tree City USA in recognition of its ongoing efforts to protect and replenish trees throughout the community. For more than 50 years, the Tree City USA program has recognized cities and towns that leverage urban forestry to enhance the livability and sustainability of their local area.

“Earning the Tree City USA designation reaffirms Richardson’s commitment to sustainability and the vital role trees play in enhancing our community’s quality of life,” said Mayor Bob Dubey. “Through programs like Richardson Replants, our residents and businesses are actively contributing to a greener, healthier future. We are grateful for their dedication and proud to see our city thrive with the beauty and benefits of urban forestry.”

To earn Tree City USA recognition, a city must uphold four core standards, including maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and participating in an Arbor Day celebration. One such commitment is the Richardson Replants program to restore trees and other foliage lost in last May’s severe storms.

Richardson Replants will host three giveaways this spring, offering three tree species suited for North Texas. More details are available at www.cor.net/RichardsonReplants.

Richardson’s Parks and Recreation Department also works with groups and individuals who want to purchase trees to be planted on city-maintained land. Learn more about this program and other opportunities to enhance Richardson’s natural beauty at www.cor.net/Plants

Trees are proven to help mitigate the urban heat island effect, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and boost mental and physical health in cities and neighborhoods. When the right trees are planted in the right places, they can also reduce traffic noise, increase property values, and lower homeowners’ energy costs.

“Achieving the Tree City USA designation took strong collaboration between several City departments, with each playing a role in identifying ways to preserve and enhance our urban forest,” said Richardson City Manager Don Magner. “From Parks and Recreation’s leadership in tree planting initiatives to the dedication of Public Works, Development Services, and other teams, this recognition reflects a citywide commitment to environmental stewardship and advancing community goals to ensure Richardson remains a vibrant, green, and resilient place for future generations.”
