The Severe Weather page provides critical information and resources for Richardson residents before, during, and after severe weather events. It covers storm debris removal, changes to trash and recycling services, power restoration guidelines, disaster recovery resources, damage reporting, and steps for staying safe and prepared.
Storm Debris Removal Plan
The City of Richardson’s Storm Debris Collection Plan follows a three‑phase process to clear debris efficiently:
Phase I – Clearing a Path: Crews push debris to the edge of the right‑of‑way, opening streets for emergency vehicles and residents.
Phase II – Curb‑to‑Curb Cleanup: Vegetative debris (branches, logs, shrubs) is collected from curbside piles. Place piles in the front right‑of‑way (not alleys) and keep them away from mailboxes, hydrants, and parked vehicles.
Phase III – Neighborhood Debris Removal: Larger or harder‑to‑remove debris is picked up; separate vegetative debris from construction materials and household waste.
Trash & Recycling Updates
During severe weather response, normal trash, recycling, and brush collection may be suspended or modified.
Power Restoration & Service Line Damage
Power Restoration:
-
Report power outages, downed lines, and streetlight issues directly to Oncor at 888‑313‑4747 or text OUT to 66267.
-
After power returns, reduce initial demand by turning off major appliances for 15 minutes and leaving a porch light on so crews know power is restored.
-
Stay away from downed power lines and anything they may touch.
Service Line Damage:
-
If your electric service equipment (meter base, weatherhead, riser) is damaged, hire a licensed electrician; Oncor cannot reconnect service until repairs are complete.
-
Homeowners are responsible for repairs to their meter base and service mast; Oncor will repair the line up to the meter.
Recovery & Cooling Stations
Disaster Recovery Center (DRC):
-
During major disasters, the City may open a DRC where residents can access FEMA Assistance and other state/federal resources. Locations and hours are announced through City channels.
Cooling & Charging Stations:
-
When widespread outages or extreme heat occur, designated city facilities provide air‑conditioned spaces and device charging stations. Check the City’s website and social media for locations and schedules.
Assistance Resources:
- FEMA Assistance: Apply for federal aid at disasterassistance.gov or call 800‑621‑3362.
- Insurance Documents: Call 800‑252‑3439 for help locating insurance policies.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA): Contact the Texas Workforce Commission at 800‑939‑6631.
Report Storm Damage
