Registered Family Homes in the City of Richardson
Registered Family Homes located within the City of Richardson are required to obtain a permit from the City of Richardson Health Department and register with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).
The Health Department conducts annual inspections of Registered Family Homes to ensure minimum standards are met, with a focus on safety, disease prevention, and proper sanitation practices. All areas used by children are included in these inspections.
Commercial Child Care Facilities
In accordance with Senate Bill 1008, local jurisdictions may issue permits only when such permits are required or regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Because DSHS does not currently permit or inspect food service operations in commercial childcare settings, local health departments can no longer do so.
As a result, the Health Department will no longer issue food establishment permit renewals or conduct routine health inspections at commercial childcare facilities.
However, if a childcare facility has a grease trap, the Health Department will continue to perform grease trap inspections as part of the City’s wastewater compliance program. In these cases, only the grease trap inspection and associated fee are required.
