Why Did I Receive a Jury Summons?
State law governs the process for selecting prospective jurors. A voter registration file from Dallas and Collin County residents of Richardson, Texas is updated every four years. Citizens are randomly selected from this list and mailed a Jury Summons requiring them to appear for in-person Jury Service.
Jury Service Requirements:
When reporting for Jury Service, you must bring your Jury Summons notice with you to court.
Exemptions from Jury Duty:
A person may claim an exemption from Jury Duty if they:
- Are 75 years of age or older (Effective 9/1/2023, HB 2015 changed the exemption age from 70 to 75)
- Have legal custody of a child under 12 years of age, and Jury Service would require leaving the child without adequate supervision
- Are a student at a public or private secondary school
- Are enrolled and attending an institution of higher learning
- Are the primary caretaker of an invalid who is unable to care for themselves
These exemptions are optional—you may still choose to serve on a jury panel even if you qualify for an exemption.
