Traffic Operations provides for the safe and efficient movement of citizens, transit, rail and freight within the City of Richardson. The City has established policies for the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices that comply with state and federal requirements.

In addition staff maintains a Traffic Operations Center (TOC) that monitors traffic conditions at 130 traffic signals and conditions along Central Expressway and the George Bush Tollway. The communications system was upgraded in 2011 to wireless Ethernet to provide video as well as data communications to all traffic signals and 34 video surveillance cameras.
