Secure bike parking is a vital piece for making cycling possible to travel to your favorite restaurant, coffee shop, or other destination. With Richardson's robust network of trails and bike lanes to help you ride to your destination, we want to make sure there are also places to park your bike once you get there.

In May 2021 for Bike Month, the City hosted an online challenge for the cyclists of Richardson to help locate where there is bike parking throughout the community. Using the online map compatible with both computers and smart phones, users could submit locations where bike racks and other bike parking exists in Richardson. The data provided by the community helped map bike parking throughout the city for users to use when planning their ride.

Securing Locking Your Bicycle

The best, most effective way to park and securely lock your bike will depend on a variety of factors. Sturdy U-shaped locks generally work best, however there are variety of locks that can be used to secure your bike. 

Before locking your bicycle, make sure to move the rack to make sure it is sturdy. When locking your bike, make sure to try and have two contact points, the frame and a wheel to the bike rack. Depending on your bike, you make want to lock the front or rear wheel. While the rear wheel is more expensive to replace, the front wheel is quicker and easier to remove making it more vulnerable. 

Requirements for Development Projects

The City of Richardson requires bicycle parking as part of new development and expansions. Bicycle parking requirements in the Zoning Ordinance were last updated in 2024. Zoning requirements address both short- and long-term bicycle parking for all non-residential uses, including apartments.
