Safe Routes to School (SRTS) encourages increased student physical activity through safe and active transport to and from school. SRTS does this through educating the community about the road and traffic safety as well as making improvements to the build environment.

Some of the key elements of a SRTS are:

  • City planning and engineering approaches to transportation addressing built environment needs and ensure safe conditions for walking and biking.
  • Tool, guides, and resources to encourage participation in safe and active transport
  • Education activities for students, parents, and community members
  • Enforcement approach to encourage safety and reduce unsafe behaviors among drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
  • Evaluation activities to monitor and measure the impact of programs

Currently the City of Richardson is working in collaboration with NCTCOG to develop a local SRTS. Check back later for more information
