The City of Richardson is committed to revitalizing its original downtown neighborhood. A fresh vision based on community values and sound economic analysis was established for the downtown area in 2013. With the vision in place, work began in 2014 to establish new land use and development regulations consistent with the vision; this work concluded in 2016. These efforts were essential to reposition downtown to facilitate new investment and fulfill the community’s vision; however, the City can only do so much. The successful transformation of Richardson’s downtown into a unique, vibrant place will also require the on-going commitment to the area by local businesses, property owners and other community stakeholders.

Private sector interests are presently driving changes in property ownership, adaptive reuse of existing buildings, and infill development of long-time vacant land parcels downtown. On the public side, the City of Richardson’s new Public Safety Complex, housing police and fire department operations, is now under construction and scheduled for completion in 2020. Reconstruction of Main Street from Abrams Road to Interurban Street is scheduled to get underway in 2018. This project will not only provide for improved traffic flow through downtown, moreover, it will result in a safer, more attractive and comfortable environment for pedestrians.

Providing high quality civic spaces that vary in design, scale and purpose will also play a vital role in the successful transformation of downtown Richardson. A range of philanthropic opportunities to contribute to the creation of these important public spaces is available. All contributions, donations or sponsorships, corporate or individual, are appropriately acknowledged.
