The Richardson Police Department Bicycle Patrol Unit was established in 1990 in an effort to reduce crime in areas that had seen a rise in drug activity, assaults and burglaries. They are deployed, as necessary,  to address specific crime and disorder problems in areas where their mobility can be maximized.

The equipment the Bike Unit uses consists of six Trek 24spd mountain bikes, which are equipped with a silent clutching system and a dual light and siren system complete with red and blue flashing lights that is powered by a rechargeable battery pack. The Bike Officers carry all the same equipment used by patrol officers except some uniform items are lighter to assist them in performing their duties.
